Canada first introduced its one-cent coin in 1858, shortly after adopting a decimal currency system. The Canadian penny circulated for more than 150 years before the Royal Canadian Mint struck its final cents in May 2012, with the coin officially withdrawn from distribution in 2013 due to rising production costs and declining purchasing power. While no longer minted, Canadian pennies remain legal tender and certain dates and varieties — such as the 1936 “Dot” cent — are highly sought after by collectors.
