The 1933 Double Eagle is extremely valuable due to its rarity and historical significance. Although nearly half a million were minted, none were legally issued for circulation because President Franklin D. Roosevelt took the U.S. off the gold standard, and most were melted down. Only a few escaped destruction, and the legal battles and unique status of the surviving coins have made them highly sought after by collectors.
