The most famous $20 Double Eagle gold coin is the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Although 445,500 of these coins were minted, they were never officially circulated due to the United States going off the gold standard. Most were melted down, but a few survived, including one that was famously auctioned for over $7 million in 2002.
