The term "karats" is used to measure the purity of gold alloys, whereas ".9999 fine" describes the purity of gold in decimal form. A gold item that is .9999 fine is 99.99% pure gold, which is equivalent to 24 karats. Therefore, the 5 gram Perth Mint Gold Bar you mentioned, being .9999 fine, is 24 karat gold.
